Definition of Adware
Adware, or advertising software, refers to code that displays adverts on a users
computer. Officially adware should only be installed and displayed to a user following
their consent, but all to often adware is installed without consent and is then
deliberately made difficult to remove -at this point, it becomes a form of malware
and should be removed.
Adware is often installed with free software, in order to keep the software free
by the manufacturer gaining revenue from the advertising displayed. It should not
always be blamed on the software manufacturer as they may not control what form
the adware takes, and whether it is legal or not - sometimes the adware is downloaded
or updated while the desired software is being installed.
